Profile Study in Oil

I’ve been getting some oil painting practice in lately… still learning how to put down those patches of colour in the right value, the right temperature, in the right place and with the right edges… it sounds so simple when you lay it out in words, but in practice it’s a struggle to get what’s in my head down on the canvas. Still, I will press on! It is really quite fun most of the time, even if the results don’t turn out quite as I intend just yet.

    Hey Alex, thanks! I haven’t had any formal classes, pretty much just trying to learn as I go. If you want a good book on painting though, Richard Schmid’s Alla Prima is the best I’ve read.

    This is a beautiful head study. I think you did quite well with the tonal values. I agree with everything you mentioned in this post. Sometimes it is a struggle but sometimes the painting works out well.
